A Case of Aneurism of the Abdominal Aorta

Regiment at Delhi, on the 1st May, 1865, complaining of a large pulsating tumour in the abdomen, and also of sharp paroxysmal shooting pains in the back and right half of the body, extending to the right shoulder, with a feeling of numbness down the inner part of rignt thigh. He states that, in February, whilst engaged in active exercise, removing gun carriages, he felt suddenly an acute pain near the situation of the now existing tumour. Previous to his admission into this hospital he had been treated for splenitis, which no doubt resembled the real affection at that stage very much. On examination, the tumour is found to be about the size of a large hen's egg, situated midway between the ensiform process and the umbilicus to the right of the mesial line. It has ail the characters of an aneurism, the bruit being very distinct. The sounds of the heart are normal, and fully heard over their various situations. The patient is weak, and unable, owing to the tumour and excessive pains, to sit up in bed or walk in the erect posture. May 12th.?No improvement; rest and quiet strictly enjoined.
